Job Description Summary

Communications Officer monitors a variety of security and fire alarms, as well as the campus-wide I.D. system, card access and parking management and is the first point of campus contact for prospective students/parents, campus visitors and new students. Provides continuous administrative support to the shift supervisor/officer-in-charge. Assists the patrol staff in filing appropriate reports and forms. Coordinates the updating of all campus events on a daily basis to ensure delivery of accurate and timely information.

Essential Functions

Provides continuous administrative support to the designated Shift Supervisors/Officers-in-Charge.

Assists the patrol staff in filing appropriate reports and forms for various walk-ups and follow-up requests.

Monitors all alarm systems to include fire, security, and the personal Security Escort alarm system. This includes coordinating and dispatching mutual aid emergency response with various outside agencies (police, fire, ambulance, etc.).

Monitors and operates the campus-wide Card Access system to ensure accurate data and security of the system.

Maintain various coordinator programs to assist in the smooth operation of the overall area (i.e., vehicle and parking ticket information, Material Safety Data Sheets, supplies, and vendor information, etc.).

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

High school diploma is required. At least two years experience in the security/criminal justice field. Experience with fire/intrusion alarm and security monitoring systems. Strong communications and organizational skills and good judgment are required. Must project a positive and professional image in all dealings and be able to function by prioritizing calls and effectively coordinate security response in all crisis and non-crisis situations.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

Associate’s degree desirable. Computer skills are also desirable.

Supervisory Responsibilities


Physical Requirements

Ability to work in a typical office environment, sitting for extended periods of time, using a computer, telephone and radio. Some walking and lifting up to 40 Lbs.
