Job Description Summary

The Career Coach for the School of Management in the Center for Life’s Work (CFLW) will guide students in developing and implementing an individualized plan(s) related to career and professional development goals. In collaboration with academic and co-curricular programs, they will assist students with identifying individual needs for ongoing development and engagement with experiential and global learning.

Essential Functions

• Engage each student in the case load in an exploration and planning process related to career development, utilizing framework developed and agreed upon within the Center for Life’s Work and faculty in related disciplines. Meet with students in case load regularly to review and each student’s progression. 25%

• Provide career counseling to students, including use of appropriate tools for self-assessment and exploration of career options. Provide on-going support through the decision making process. 10%

• Assist students in the integration of their major, Core Curriculum, experiential learning, and career development. Attend faculty meetings in relevant disciplines and provide updates to other Career Coaches, as well as career services and academic advisement staff. Collaborate closely with academic advisors, learning more about curricular options for students and sharing career development / employer information so that both might better advise students. 10%

• Provide discipline-specific (as well as assist with occasional college-wide) CLW programming, events, and experiential learning recommendations. Support to students by reviewing resumes and cover letters, conducting mock interviews, reviewing LinkedIn profiles, and teaching modern job and internship search tactics. As appropriate, advise students on graduate programs and the graduate application process relevant to majors in area of responsibility. 15%

• Gather data on the success of graduates, by increasing the response rate to the Outcomes Survey. Improve the college’s overall Knowledge Rate by collecting first destination data through social media searches and direct outreach to students in their caseload. 5%

• Perform employer outreach for development of internship and field placement opportunities (if appropriate) as well for full-time, part-time and summer employment possibilities. Assist with facilitation of reflective seminars for students engaged in internships and/or work study. 5%

• Refer students to the alumni mentor program. Plan career relevant programs such as “What Can I Do With a Major In”events for the different disciplines in their purview, featuring alumni and employers. 5%

• Assist with assessment of the programs and services of the Center for Life’s Work. 5%

ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Staff the Center for Life’s Work on occasional nights and weekends. Participate in regular meetings with other Life’s Work Coaches and career services/academic advisement staff. Participate in on-going professional development through conferences, webinars, and involvement with professional organizations. 10%

• Teach at least 1 career development, college success, leadership seminar or a moodle course designed to enhance the overall career development of students.

• Engage with students outside of standard office hours and roles, by supporting student clubs, organizations, athletic teams, and/or student development programs.

• Continues to grow and learn as a professional in order to better meet the needs of students and alumni by:
- Actively participating in webinars, professional training opportunities, conferences and seminars
- Serving on college and division-wide committees
- Maintaining membership in professional organizations including the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the Rochester Area Career Development Association and other regional associations as possible

• Other duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in counseling, college student personnel, higher education/student affairs, human resources or related program preferred.

• At least 2 years of experience counseling/advising students with diverse backgrounds and a variety of career or post-graduation goals.

• Exceptional organizational skills and be able to attend to and prioritize projects.

• Ability to successfully manage interpersonal working relationships. As appropriate, collaborate with staff in other units and divisions to achieve the goals of the College.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Handles confidential information sensitively and appropriately.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver presentations, workshops, and seminars.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to edit and assist with the preparation of career and graduate school related documents.

• Demonstrates commitment to working in a diverse workplace and to building a pluralistic community by promoting an increased understanding of individual differences and perspectives that will enable workforce cohesiveness.

• High emphasis placed on professionalism, efficiency and a positive attitude.

• Annual participation in professional development; focuses on acquiring, improving and applying technological and other skills that are essential to achieving the goals of the College.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

• Master’s degree (or completion of graduate credits relevant to this description) in counseling, college student personnel, higher education/student affairs, or related program.

• Familiar with career coaching tools such as StrengthsQuest, Focus, etc. Knowledge of technologies related to campus recruiting, such as Handshake, Symplicity, or CSO.

• Knowledge of social media platforms, as well as specific knowledge about using social media to job search, network, and market one’s skills.

• Field specific knowledge related to school or department.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise graduate assistants and/or student workers

Physical Requirements

Sedentary office position. Will require candidates to lift up to 20 pounds.
